Summer Skin Care Tips

Posted on Posted in blog

Summer is here! Ok, that may seem a bit premature considering the fact that I was curled up on the couch, with my thickest blanket just last night, but for the most part we have had beautiful weather along the South African Coast! For me, the tease of good weather, is enough to kick me into skincare overdrive!

I know I’m not the only one that goes through the phase of ‘winter-neglect’, whether is limited to your workout routines or spans across your inability to put cold cream on your body, it’s a time when our skin is meant to be hidden. To get you started on rejuvenating your skin and getting into your favourite shorts, I have pulled together a few Summer Skincare Tips that wont cost a fortune and will leave you with the beautiful summer-ready skin !

1 . Hydrate

We’ve heard it time and time again, but drinking plenty of water is still one of the best ways to clear your complexion and detox your body. You don’t have to go overboard, but instead try match whatever you drink during the day with a glass of water i.e before you have your next cup of coffee make sure you’ve had your glass of water in between.

*Tip: Drinking water does not have to be a bore, make it bit more interesting by adding natural flavourants such as lemon, mint or even cucumber – which is also known to be a natural appetite suppressant.

2. Exfoliate

Exfoliating is the best TLC you could possibly give your skin and if you are anything like me during winter, your elbows, knees and heels are probably in particular need. Exfoliating is not only a great way of getting rid of dead skin cells, but also helps to improve the body’s overall blood circulation.

There are a number of ways to exfoliate; dry brushing, loofahs, body scrubs, etc .Exfoliating scrubs are my personal favourite! Try Derma Cleanse’s Lemon Verbena Body Scrub if you want to target difficult areas such as elbows and knees – the entire cleanse range has an incredible botanical extract that acts as a skin softener. Not only does the product get rid of the dead skin that has managed to accumulate during winter, but also moisturizes, leaving your skin feeling smooth after your first scrub!

*Tip: For best results and your initial attack on unwanted dry skin use the product BEFORE you get into the shower or bath!

3. Moisturize

Moisturizing is an obvious summer necessity, but just like my grandmother nags me to put cream on, I’m going to remind you again. My motivation to moisturize has always come from the reminder that ‘moisturized skin tans better’ and if that’s not enough I don’t know what is. If you enjoy all things that are sweetly summer you will fall in love with Derma Cleanse’s Coconut Cream; with subtle scents of vanilla it smells like summer should.

*Tip: Moisturize after a warm bath or shower as cream is absorbed easier into the skin.

4. Sunscreen

You want that perfect bronze glow, not the complexion of a ripe tomato, so do yourself a favour and invest in a great sunblock this summer. I am all for a great summer glow, but burning your skin to get it is completely out of the question! To avoid your skin from premature aging use makeup or face cream containing a SPF of at least 15.

*Tip: Don’t purchase sunscreens with SPFs higher 40 as they contain loads of chemicals, rather opt for lower SPFs and apply more frequently for happier skin.

5. Eat Consciously

Eating healthily is not a ‘quick fix’ to getting smooth and healthy skin, but its a method that will outlast any other. I recently found out that eating kiwi fruit can help down the aging of your skin and thats just the start – there are tons of different foods that are highly beneficial for your skin. Make a point to incorporate foods such as salmon, nuts, grapefruit, etc into your diet or make simple changes such as swapping out one of your coffees for a cup of green tea.

*Tip: CUT DOWN ON THE SUGAR ! Sugar is a catalyst for bad skin, try to prevent your skin from breaking out by cutting as much sugar as you can from your diet. No more fizzy drinks!
